ACSM Health / Fitness Instructor (HFI) Workshop and Business Management for the Fitness Professional

Thank you for your interest in participating in the ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) workshop and CEC Program hosted by the National Institute for Fitness and Sport (NIFS) in Indianapolis. Now is your chance to earn the gold standard for measuring your competence as a professional. The ACSM HFS certification is a universally recognized mark of excellence among your peers and potential employers. It is designed for individuals who work in preventive health programs aimed at apparently healthy individuals.

The successful candidate will be able to design safe and effective exercise prescriptions, and conduct individual exercise programs, fitness testing and health education for low to moderate-risk individuals and individuals with controlled diseases.

Please read the following information carefully as it includes specifics on workshop reference materials and preparation, accommodations, travel, directions and parking. To download a flyer for this workshop please click here.

ACSM Certified Health Fitness Specialist (HFS) workshop

Minimum Requirements for Examination

  • Associates Degree, Bachelor's Degree, or Masters Degree in a health-related field from a regionally accredited college/university (one is eligible to sit for the exam if the candidate is in the last term of their degree program) AND
  • Possess current adult CPR certification that has a practical skills examination component (such as the American Heart Association of the American Red Cross)

Workshop

October 7– 8, 2009 (Registration deadline is September 17, 2009)

The Workshop is designed to enhance your existing knowledge base as well as provide instruction and practice time for fitness testing skills. You will be exposed to dynamic and knowledgeable speakers who will impact your ability to work with your clients. The Workshop is not designed, however, to provide you with answers to specific test questions. For those candidates who have little experience in fitness testing or exercise leadership, it may be wise to schedule your certification examination during a month that follows your workshop experience.

To prepare for the workshop/certification, we suggest that candidates use the ACSM HFS Certification Study Packet containing the ACSM's Guidelines for Exercise Testing and Prescription 8th edition, ACSM's Resource Manual 6th edition, and ACSM's Health/Fitness Certification Review Book 3rd edition. The Guidelines contain a set of objectives for the HFS examination called Knowledge, Skills & Abilities (KSA) which you should review and use as a study tool prior to arriving at our workshop. These materials and others can be ordered from ACSM's Certification Resource Center (CRC) by calling 1-800-486-5643 or visiting online . Note that these resources will be referenced throughout the Workshop and will not be available for purchase at NIFS.

Check-in for the 2009 HFS workshop begins at 8:00 a.m. on October 7. An orientation and workshop overview will immediately follow. Workshop days will follow a 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. schedule with breaks during the day and 30 - 60 minutes for lunch.

During the workshop we suggest you dress comfortably in exercise clothing as most of your activities will be informal and some will require the performance of fitness tests. You may want to bring a sweatshirt or jacket, as our meeting rooms are often cool.
