Bod Pod

Bod Pod

Bod Pod Q & A

NIFS brings you the latest technology in body composition assessment through the BOD POD®.

At NIFS we understand that the path to wellness relies on lifestyle decisions that are reflected in body composition. "Losing weight" is a misleading goal. The bathroom scale does not know the difference between a pound of fat and a pound of muscle. The BOD POD is a device that accurately measures the percentage of body fat and lean body mass, enabling you to track your body composition more effectively.

How can it help improve my body composition and overall health?

Because the BOD POD is very accurate, it can detect even small changes in body fat and lean body mass (i.e., muscle). A NIFS fitness instructor can use this information to track and modify your training program for optimal gains and losses! With skinfold measurements you may have to wait several months to measure detectable changes. This delays the necessary modifications to your program and therefore delays your improvements. A NIFS nutritionist can also use this information to track and modify your existing nutritional program.

A BOD POD body composition assessment provides you and the NIFS staff with the information needed to help you achieve greater improvements faster! As a result you will have less fat, more muscle and stronger bones.

How does it work?

It is based on the same principle as underwater weighing except that air displacement is used to measure body volume instead of water. As you sit in the Pod's air tight cabin, a fixed amount of air is injected into the chamber. The pressure in the chamber will increase proportional to the size of your body. You do not feel the pressure change. The Pod's machinery detects these changes and correlates them to the volume of air your body is taking up.

How long does an assessment take?

You will be sitting inside the Pod's cabin about 3 minutes. However, during that time the door will be opened and closed between two 50-second trials to measure body volume. Total time including goal setting and reviewing the results is approximately 10 to 15 minutes.

What do I need to do once sitting inside the Pod's cabin?

You simply relax and breathe normally while the BOD POD does the rest! You will hear some valves opening and closing accompanied by some "wooshing" sounds, but just ignore them.

In order to have accurate results you will need to follow some simple instructions before the assessment:

  • Use the restroom before testing, if necessary.
  • No food or exercise 3-4 hours prior to testing.
  • Minimal clothing is essential.
  • Men: Thin fabric shorts, Speedo, or briefs are ideal.
  • Women: Swimsuit or Lycra shorts and sports bra are ideal.

How accurate is it?

It is as accurate as the gold standard method of underwater weighing. It can measure your percentage of body fat within 1% to 2.7% of your actual percentage body fat. Not only is it highly accurate, it is highly sensitive to even small changes in body composition. This makes it ideal for tracking changes in body composition in as little as four to eight weeks. Skinfolds and other less-accurate methods require up to several months to track changes.

How much does a BOD POD cost?

NIFS members will get one free test per year with a Personal Fitness Evaluation. BOD POD testing costs $45 or buy a pack of two for $80.

How do I schedule a BOD POD test?

You can schedule with any of the fitness instructors. Call 317.274.3432 ext. 262. Appointments can also be made in conjunction with a personal training or personal nutrition coaching session.
