Group Fitness (1 position)
Description
This internship is for the individual who teaches group fitness and is interested in learning about the development and coordination of group fitness programs. There is one position available in this area.
Duties
- Assist in day-to-day management of multiple group fitness programs and instructors.
- Maintain current personnel and client files.
- Assist in 6-week instructor training program.
- Assist in instructor evaluation.
- Assist in marketing group fitness services to prospective clients.
Background
- Interest and experience in group exercise instruction.

Athletic Performance (1 position)
Description
This internship is for the individual who is interested in working with athletes of all ages in a wide variety of sports. Interns in this position are usually interested in becoming strength and conditioning coaches. There is one position available in this area during the spring and fall semesters only.
Duties
- Administer field skills testing and training programs for children and adults.
- Assist in athletic development camps, field trips, customized clinics, private consultations, private or semi-private lessons and presentations.
- Assist in the development of sport-specific training programs.
Background
- Background in sports and/or training as an athlete or a coach.
- Keen interest in the testing and training of athletes.
- Knowledge of applied exercise physiology, kinesiology, functional anatomy, health and fitness appraisal and measurement of skills related to sport performance.
- Knowledge of plyometric training techniques.

Corporate Fitness Management (3 positions)
Description
This internship is for the individual who is interested in working in a fitness/wellness center located within a corporation or older adult facility. The intern in this position will be assigned to one of the 35 corporate or older adult sites managed by NIFS. There are three positions available in this area.
Duties
- Conduct health screening and fitness testing.
- Develop exercise prescriptions and equipment orientations.
- Assist in the day-to-day operations of a corporate fitness facility.
- Prepare of educational materials including bulletin boards, newsletter articles, health quizzes, etc.
- Plan motivation and incentive programs.
- Market and promote membership.
Background
- Interest in management of a corporate fitness facility.
- Educational background in corporate wellness programming, fitness assessment/exercise testing and exercise prescription.
- Strong interpersonal skills.
- Knowledge of ACSM guidelines for exercise prescription (certification not mandatory).
- Knowledge of applied exercise physiology, kinesiology, functional anatomy, nutrition, health appraisal and fitness testing.
- Experience working with weight resistance and aerobic conditioning equipment.
- Personal mode of transportation.
- Skilled in Microsoft Windows applications.
Educational Services (1 – 2 positions)
Description
This internship is for the individual who is interested in developing, promoting and implementing nutrition, fitness and wellness programs. The intern in this position is usually interested in becoming a Wellness Coordinator, Health Promotion Specialist, Health Educator, Registered Dietitian or Facility Manager. There are one to two positions available in this area.
Duties
- Assist in the organization, implementation and/or presentation of health- and wellness-related programs (program examples include Lite‘N Up Weight Management, Mini-Marathon, Stress Management Seminars, Team Building and Corporate Wellness Services).
- Develop educational materials to supplement existing programs.
- Conduct literature searches for current trends/guidelines in the field.
- Create and present a cooking demonstration for our weight management program.
Background
- Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Educational background in health promotion/health education, exercise science, corporate fitness, wellness, public health, and/or nutrition.
- Ability to organize and schedule events and meet deadlines.
- Skilled in Microsoft Windows applications.
- Ability to juggle a varied schedule and several tasks at one time.
- Must possess excellent “people skills” and the ability to interact with individuals at all levels of education and learning.

Duties

Youth Development (1 position)
Description
This internship is for the individual interested in working with children from preschool through high school in all areas of health and fitness education. There is one position available in this area.
Duties
- Assist in the organization and administration of NIFS Youth Field Trip Programs.
- Assist in the development of educational materials to support existing youth programs.
- Conduct research and assist in the development of relevant grants that support the health and fitness of today’s youth.
- Assist in the creation and development of future youth programs.
Background
- Educational background in health education, physical education, wellness, and/or exercise science.
- Experience working with and presenting to children of all ages and abilities.
- Energetic and creative personality.
- Skilled in Microsoft Windows applications.
- Ability to organize large groups.
- Ability to supervise and coach student volunteers.
