Picking a Personal Trainer

By Jennifer Cassetty, M.S., ACSM HFI, CET

Personal trainers help bridge the gap between good intentions and a realistic, effective exercise program. At NIFS, personal trainers have college degrees in fitness-related fields and national certifications. They also have expertise in creating exercise prescriptions for clients of varying ages and abilities.

When choosing a personal trainer (PT), think “HEALTH”:

H: Help in assessing your needs and goals. A PT should be able to assess your current fitness status and the exercises best suited to help you achieve your goals.

E: Efficiently create the best program for you. A PT should be able to create a well-balanced workout program based on your needs and goals.

A: Attain your set goals in the shortest time. A PT should make sure you are spending your time wisely when exercising; ask what a realistic timeframe will be to achieve your goals.

L: Lose weight through an individualized fitness program. For those wanting it, a PT should be able to develop a plan that focuses on weight management and overall health/fitness.

T: Train the easy way. A PT assesses your form while you exercise; choose a PT who accompanies you during some/all of your exercise sessions.

H: Help in motivation and continued support. A PT can be your own private cheerleader. Find a trainer that gets you moving!

Are you interested in working with a personal trainer? Then talk to a NIFS staff member to identify the services that fit your budget and meet your fitness needs. The next step is to introduce yourself to the personal training staff to determine what trainer is best suited to help you reach your goals. Each personal trainer schedules his own appointments; therefore the last step is finding a mutually feasible time for your first session.

Personal trainers can be an invaluable tool for improving your health and fitness. If you have any questions, contact a personal trainer at 317.274.3432 ext. 266.
